Overview

A pilot named Ted Herbert goes for a spin over midtown Manhattan in February 1937. He is operating a new type of sport plane dubbed a "flivver" in The New York Times, which houses a V-8 automobile engine. This latest invention would reportedly solve New York's traffic problems since the engine "could be taken from a Ford and installed in the plane when the owner decides to quit the road and take to the air." Mr. Herbert reportedly flew out of Roosevelt Field in Long Island, N.Y. The Empire State Building, then only 6-years old, can be seen below.
